MUN 2019 ALKMAAR/ AMSTERDAM
Between the 13th and 19th of June, three students from the Işık Nişantaşı Junior Model United Nations club attended the 26th Annual International Model United Nations of Alkmaar. This is a prestigious Model United Nations conference located north of Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Our school’s group represented a delegation from the Dominican Republic in three separate councils that simulated the real United Nations. Using strong English communication skills and knowledge of current events, geography and international politics, our students had to think from the perspective of the Dominican Republic and vote on motions in their respective UN committees. Students from our group participated in debating, voting and resolution writing procedures in the conference’s Security Council, Special Conference on Outer Space Affairs, and the Historical Committee. Our students discussed and debated on a variety of issues, from the situation in Syria to an arms race in Outer Space to the regeneration of war-torn countries. Overall, our students brilliantly represented both our school and the Dominican Republic. They gained a wider perspective on global issues and displayed true courage by giving speeches and debate points on these exact issues. Lastly, they met people from several countries, thus providing a great opportunity for cultural understanding.
For the last part of the trip, the students enjoyed a wonderful walk through Amsterdam, seeing great sites and experiencing local culture. This included a visit to the Rijks Museum, an afternoon at the NEMO Science and Technology Museum, and even an interactive tour of the Amsterdam Dungeon! The students had a great time, and we are proud of the work they accomplished.
